Mississippi Secure Food Supply Program
Introduction to Secure Food Supply Plans – What are they?
The Secure Food Supply (SFS – cfsph.iastate.edu) plans are voluntary plans that help producers prepare for a foreign animal disease (FAD) outbreak such as Foot and Mouth Disease. The plans are commodity-specific (beef, milk, pork, poultry, sheep/wool, goat/milk/mohair) and are based on risk-based science.
A Secure Food Supply Plan improves an operation’s ability to:
- Limit lost income in the event of a FAD outbreak
- Keep animals healthy by limiting exposure to disease-causing pathogens through enhanced biosecurity measures
- Continue movement of animals to maintain supply of products to customers and consumers
The Mississippi Secure Food Supply Program
The Mississippi Secure Food Supply Program offers free expertise and technical assistance to producers who create a Secure Food Supply Plan for their operation. Mississippi Board of Animal Health (MBAH) staff are available to conduct on-site visits or phone consultations to assist producers with writing SFS plans. Simple plans may take 1-2 hours to complete, while more complex plans may take longer. Once the plan is complete, producers can voluntarily submit the plan for formal review by MBAH. Program participants who have their SFS plan reviewed and accepted by MBAH will be prepared to quickly respond to animal disease outbreaks and will be ready to request animal movement permits in the event of an outbreak.
