Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) & West Nile Virus (WNV) Resources
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and West Nile Virus (WNV) are potentially fatal diseases of horses transmitted by mosquitoes. Both diseases affect the nervous system and have a high mortality rate. EEE is fatal in unvaccinated horses, often more than 90% of the time. WNV in unvaccinated horses ranges from 30-40%. Effective vaccines are available for both diseases. MBAH encourages all horse owners to work with their veterinarian to develop a vaccine protocol to prevent these diseases in their horses.
